Firstly, a small A small sample of what you can find in our jukebox area, many many more very old and vintage recordings will be coming there in next few months. Some from even as early as the start of the 1900′ so if old music interests you, don’t forget to keep checking back.
But in the meantime a few thoughts on the hybrid city/town center development in Morpeth which I must admit I have some concerns about.
Now for the niggles, this time concerning the New Development of the Sanderson Arcade.
There are a few things I did not know about the dransfield development and one of them is that it owns the bus station, which apparantly according to the manager and a security guard, this gives this them the unquestionable right to stop the buses anytime they wish. A curious and somewhat alarming anomoly methinks.
I must admit not being happy to the idea of something as essential as a bus station being owned by private enterprise, other than the bus operators themselves, something as valuable as public services should remain just that! I also cannot help wondering what public rights of way have been abolished for Dransfield to achieve this.
I was also, whilst querying the role of the Security guards, (as one had sworn at and threatened a teenager who was on the premisis during an altecration), told that the security guards are there so that the shoppers are safe. Whilst I am a little concerned at the idea of anyone being threatened, I wonder more at the fact that there were never any security guards at the old Arcade. I suppose taking this into consideration that the shoppers were unsafe in the old Sanderson Arcade, while they bought their goods from the small wool shop, the card shop, the flower shop and Linmore, many of whom were indiscriminately thrown out, even after they were told somewhat uncerimoniously, that they were not the type of businesses that were wanted in this ” New Sanderson Arcade” and that they were not welcome, despite the fact that they were promised places if the Arcade went ahead.
Now, we have the equivalent to what is a city shopping centre in a small market town and the only thing that this Arcade seems to have really achieved, is to diminish the original character of the town into that of a common city centre! Sad!
One cannot help but wonder though, if this was the intention that the politicians had in the first place. After all one only has to look at just how much Newgate Street has been neglected, to see how much our local representatives really care about Morpeth Centre. If it Is not big business their nose isnt in it. I guess the accolades are better from something as unwelcome as the new Arcade is.
A subtle reminder is not amiss that there are shops on Newgate Street too, although every word that the local media seems to spout is about this new shopping centre and what it will bring to Morpeth!
Still, each to their own opinion I suppose, but considering Morpeth was once a thriving market town, it really does go to show, just what the politicians have achieved. The virtual extinction of the market, the selling off of the town’s soul, parking charges, not to mention ultra high business rates! All in all they have done the exact opposite of what was really needed and no wonder there is a recession.
As for 3,000,000 vistiors or so, there are around 40,000 people living in Morpeth and its surrounding areas, give or take a few, certainly the residents will shop here, those who are willing to pay the parking charges that is.
One also ought to remember that the Sanderson Arcade is the throughfare from the bus station to the main town centre, so it is going to be used very regularly! Kind of obvious really!
Sorry, but despite all things I do not believe that this Arcade is well placed in a small town centre like Morpeth, it belongs in the city along with its corporate development, big name shops and high profile security guards Bring back our market town Thank you!
But again each to their own opinions, I dare say there are those in political circles who think it is the “bees knees” so to speak. But that more often than not is down simply to the delusion which modern politics crawls under, a kind of self admiration society with pretty feathers!
On a final note and one our politicians should give some thought to, perhaps perhaps our ”local politicos” should send a request to whoever renames towns and suggest Morpeth be renamed Dranspeth, it would be much more fitting surely?
After all this (New) Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth is simply a horrible place. So maybe in consideration of that, a horrible name would be more appropriate.
